Programs - Educational

Golf is an internal competitive sport including extended periods of concentration, immediate gratification and a sense of accomplishment. Is there a direct correlation between golf and academics? We believe that golf can enhance a child's ability to improve their academic performance levels.
One of our top priorities here at San Diego Junior Golf Foundation is to provide avenues for obtaining academic excellence. We accomplish this task by implementing support programs and with the assistance of the parent(s), monitoring the student's academic performance levels.
Our students have the opportunity to participate in three different educational enhancement programs:

  • Vital Link Enrichment
  • Vital Link Tutorial
  • Reading-Right Foundation

Vision Statement: We endeavor to impact our community with educational empowerment, economic development, and social improvement.

Vital Link Enrichment and Vital Link Tutorial programs are an innovative effort to strengthen the literacy and social skills of children that attend either program. The programs provide a safe, caring environment in the community. Vital Link Enrichment - assist children with homework, computer literacy, sign language training, and arts and crafts. Vital Link Tutorial – includes homework assistance, SAT practice testing and college entrance practice.

Our staff volunteers includes a member with a degree in Child Development. Since his arrival and in conjunction with our partnership with the Children, Youth and Family Network, we have extended our educational programs to meet the social, physical, environmental and mental needs for our students.

Personal Computer Training - Students receive year round personal computer training and assistance. Hours may vary during regular school session, but during the summertime, classes are conducted from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Summertime Program - During the summer, the San Diego Inner City Junior Golf Foundation offers golf instructions three times a week from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Inner City Library - Reading is fundamental and key to life experiences. Our theme is: Don't make a bogie, read a book. The San Diego Junior Golf Foundation continues to build a comprehensive library of classical reading materials and video tapes. Our students are encouraged to make reading a top priority in their everyday life.

Personal Development - Our staff includes a member who has a degree in child development, and we have instituted a program utilizing this valuable knowledge base, where our children receive self-esteem and confidence building classes. Once a month, our students are required to attend our Kids Talk program. This program includes classes in public speaking, role playing using social and emotional topics. Monitored by a staff member, the kids select topics that are important to them and a team leader facilitates the discussions. All classes are video taped. This allows our parents, instructors and board members insight to what is important to our children. Lessons learned in our classes are also used to identify social, mental and physical needs and to enhance the parent-children relationship.
