Horace Brown - Founder

Horace Brown is a very inspiring and dedicated golf professional and community leader. He was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He grew up in beautiful San Diego, California. Horace began playing golf at the age of four. He was taught by his father Mr. Gordon Brown Sr. Gordon played on the UGA Negro Golf Tour in the 1950’s and 60’s with PGA greats like Lee Elder, Charlie Sifford and the legendary prize fighter Joe Louis.

Horace first golf competition began at the age of nine, He then went on to win over 57 junior golf tournaments in his junior golf career. He was known as Tiger before Tiger as a junior golfer. Horace then won his age division five different times and is celebrated as San Diego County Junior Golfer of the Year in 1980 with names like Phil Mickelson, Charlie Hoffman, Scott Simpson, Pat Perez and many other PGA greats.

Horace then played golf for La Jolla High School; where he composed one of the best high school records in the history of San Diego. Horace is the only golfer in the history of San Diego City Schools to win the San Diego City High School Match Play Championships three years in a row. He also won two (2) City conference championships and (1) CIF Individual golf championship over the tough Torrey Pines South Golf Course. He represented San Diego County in the (3) Junior Americas Cups team championships in Hawaii, Canada and Idaho.

Horace then attended San Diego State University where he studied Business Administration while making the Men’s Varsity Golf Team as a freshman. He was medalist in (8) NCAA college matches while his coach Dr. Frank Scott was inducted into the NCAA Coaches Hall of Fame in 1982.

Horace became the first African American in the history of San Diego to hold the title of Golf Starter #1 for Parks and Recreation where he operated Balboa Park and Torrey Pines Golf Courses 1988 -1991. Turning Professional Golfer in 1991, He attended PGA Tour School where he played golf with Michael Nicklaus the son of the great Jack Nicklaus at Bear lakes in Florida. Horace played Mini-Tour golf and Monday qualified the PGA Tour for 10 years before finally obtaining his PGA Tour card in FIJI and Mexico that included playing and living with the family of Vijay Singh from 2004 to 2008 and 2002 - 2004 in Mexico.

Giving back to his community in 1996 - Present, Horace and his father founded the San Diego Inner City Junior Golf Foundation Incorporated helping over 5,000 students at 11 Elementary Schools in National City, CA. The foundation has given out more than 75,00O dollars in scholarships helping students to graduate from major colleges and universities.

​

Horace is now qualifying the U.S PGA and Champions Tour. While looking for sponsorships, He also gives private golf lessons and plans to take his clientele to luxury golf destinations in the San Diego areas with PGA instruction.

  • Gold Medalist and Team champion in the Jr. Americas Cup. Canada-Vancouver -British Columbia, Hawaii and Idaho.

  • La Jolla High School CIF Individual and Team Champions 1979 and 1980.

  • (8) Time medalist at San Diego State University Men’s Varsity Golf Team.

  • (5) Time winner on the Golden State Mini Tour.

  • FIJI PGA Tour Card 2004 – Present.

  • 3rd Place in 2004 FIJI Open.

  • 2nd Place in 2005 FIJI Open.

  • 4th Place in 2005 New Caledonia France Open.

  • 3rd Place in 2008 FIJI Open.

  • 4th Place in 2008 Samoa Open.

  • 2012 PGA Southern California Heritage Award recipient “The Gordon Brown Family”.

  • 2012 African American Golfers Hall of Fame inductee.

  • 2013 PGA Champions National Tour School Qualifying – Bear Creek CA.

  • 2014 PGA Champions Tour /Toshiba Classic Qualifying – Hemet, CA

  • 2014 PGA Tour /Farmers Open Qualifying – San Diego, CA.

  • 2017 Advocates Pro Golf Tour Championship Los Angeles – Chester Washington Golf Course.

  • 2018 PGA Tour San Diego Farmers Open Qualifying participant – Carlton Oaks Country Club.

  • 2022 U.S. Senior Open Qualifying - Finished tied for 20th.
